Recently, we had the opportunity to interview one of our favorite guests, Michael Kelley. Michael is a descendant of the original owners of Kelley House. Michael and his wife Lisa were on island this past week in celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day festivities hosted by The Newes From America Pub and Kelley House.
Kelley House: What is your favorite thing about the Kelley House?
Michael Kelley: I’ve been coming to the Kelley House since 2001. Aside from my personal connection, the staff is what brings us back. The treatment my family and I get is superb. On the other hand, sitting in the lobby and observing first time guests, they get the same treatment. It must be the culture that was instilled. Past management teams of Steve, to Charlotte to present day manager Michael, they do put the guests needs first.
Kelley House: What is your favorite dish at The Newes from America Pub?
Michael Kelley: Whenever I try a new restaurant, I get a burger. The thought process is, if you can’t do that right, I’ll pass. I’ve been getting burgers at the Newes since 2001. It’s so good I’m surprised I’ve tried anything else but I have. The fried chicken is simple but always perfect. Don’t forget the clam chowder. (They’ll put a fried egg on the burger if you ask)
Kelley House: If you could recommend to our guests just ONE thing to do on island, what would that be?
Michael Kelley: My recommendation for a trip to Martha’s Vineyard is not to bring a car. Take the time to see the sights from a walk up North Water street, to people watching in Edgartown village. The cemetery on Pease Point is fascinating with all the old stories. My 5th and 6th great grandparents are buried there so it’s probably a little more interesting to me. They also happen to be the original management team of the Kelley House. I hope their philosophy towards guests was the same as it is today.
Thanks to Michael Kelley for sharing his island favorites, as well as his love for the Kelley House. If you’d like to check out our St. Patrick’s Day celebration, head on over to our Facebook page for great photos!
